Pool and Spa Water Testing

Pool Water Testing – Pool Boy – Hach

It is necessary to test pool and spa water to maintain conditions that maximize the antimicrobial effectiviness of chlorine and keep the water safe for recreational use. Optimizing these conditions by testing saves money on chemical treatment.

Common parameters tested in Pools and Spas:

  • pH
  • Chlorine Free & Total
  • Cyanuric Acid
  • Hardness, Calcium
  • Alkalinity, total

Maintaining proper pH in pools is necessary for effective chlorine activity (pH below 7.4) and prevention of algae (pH below 8). If the pH drops below 7.0, corrosion of pipes and metal may occur.

Chlorine is added to control harmful bacteria, but high chlorine levels can irritate eyes and bleach swimming suits and low levels won't eliminate harmful microbes. Free chlorine is the most effective form of chlorine in the water. It reacts with ammonia and other organic compounds to form chloramines, which are more stable but not as effective for controlling bacteria. The total chlorine includes both free and combined forms.

Cyanuric acid is a stabilizing agent for chlorine often added to swimming pools.

Hardness is a part of the balance of water. "Hard" water can have high levels of calcium and magnesium. Water that is too "hard" can cause scaling, deposits of calcium carbonate. "Soft-water" will actually corrode surfaces inside the pool which contain calcium (like pool plaster) and other minerals.

Alkalinity in the water is a measurement of all carbonates, bicarbonates, hydroxides, and other alkaline substances found in the pool water. pH is alkaline dependent; that is, alkalinity is defined as the ability of the water to resist changes in pH. Alkalinity keeps the pH from "bouncing" all over the place.

  • Includes color discs and a comparator for monitoring chlorine and pH
  • Kit contains all required reagents and apparatus in a rugged carrying case for analysis in the field

Bromine Color Cube Test Kit , Model LP

$Contact Hach

Bromine Color Cube Test Kit , Model LP
Bromine Test Kit for Pools, Spas, and Hot Tubs. Bromine is less volatile than chlorine and is used as a disinfectant in spas and hot tubs, as well as swimming pools. Utilizing the long-path color cube method, this kit tests for Bromine (Br2).

  • Designed for Pool, Spa and Hot tub maintenance
  • Achieve fast results with an easy-to-carry test kit

Test Strips

5 in 1 Pool Water Quality Test Strips

5 in 1 Water Quality Test Strips
5 in 1 test strips are great for quick, on-site evaluations of water quality with reliable results on every test. These mulit-parameter test strips test for five water quality measurements on 1 strip. Contains 50 tests.

  • Free Chlorine (0-10 mg/L)
  • Total Chlorine (0-10 mg/L)
  • Total Hardness (as CaCO3, 0-25 gpg and 0-425 mg/L)
  • Total Alkalinity (as CaCO3, 0-240 mg/L)
  • pH (6.2 - 8.4)

BART Test for Spa & Pool Water Bacteria – Hach

BART Test for Pool and Spa Bacteria, pk/9
Recreational waters such as swimming pools, hot tubs and beaches can often harbor a range of bacteria. These bacteria can affect the water quality and also present a hygiene risk. This tester has been designed to detect even low numbers of these nuisance bacteria so that suitable disinfection treatments can be applied to the water and the pumping / filtration equipment.

  • Simple yet effective method for monitoring the population size and/or activity of specific groups of bacteria
  • Easy to use, requiring no elaborate or costly equipment and no specialized training
  • Effective and affordable tests are easy to interpret and can be performed at room temperature in virtually any environment
