Heterotrophic Plate Count (HPC) testing provides a general measure of viable heterotrophic bacteria in water and is commonly used to evaluate treatment performance for drinking water and swimming pools, and to monitor finished water quality throughout a distribution system. In chloraminated systems, increasing HPC results may indicate rising biological activity and the early onset of nitrification, which can increase disinfectant demand. For smaller systems or operations with limited resources, HPC can also serve as a cost-effective troubleshooting tool when routine water quality indicators begin to trend outside normal ranges.
