M-EI agar is for the detection and enumeration of Enterococci by the membrane filtration method. Enterococci are found in the feces of warm-blooded animals. Although enterococci may be present without fecal pollution, enterococci are an indicator organism in water. The detection of enterococci indicates the presence of fecal pollution and the potential for the presence of additional pathogens, but not all Enterocci are found in feces. Blue coloration around colonies within 24 hours indicates Enteroccal bacteria. Further testing may be needed for confirmation of fecal species.
