For customer preparation of microbiological media. Lactose Broth is a non-selective, inhibitor-free, nutrient-rich medium used to detect, enumerate, and cultivate coliform bacteria (including E. coli) in food, dairy, and water samples. It supports recovery of sublethally injured organisms and provides a clear indication of lactose fermentation through gas production in Durham tubes.
As a presumptive test medium for coliforms, Lactose Broth identifies organisms that ferment lactose and produce gas within 24 - 48 hours, observed using an inverted Durham tube (Hach PN 2162800).
Lactose Broth may also be used as a non-selective pre-enrichment step for detecting Salmonella spp., particularly when organisms may be stressed or present at low levels (e.g., in processed foods). Pre-enrichment allows recovery before transfer to selective enrichment media.
