This workshop is designed to teach laboratory techniques for the analysis of corrosion control parameters in potable water. Parameters covered in the course include pH, temperature, conductivity, and hardness and alkalinity titrations. For each parameter, the theory of measurement will be presented and discussed. Calibration, verification, and troubleshooting techniques will also be discussed and practiced in a hands-on laboratory setting. This class will review the wastewater process with an emphasis on nutrient analysis, removal, and control. Nitrogen compounds (ammonia, nitrate, total nitrogen), phosphate and total phosphorous will be analyzed with laboratory and field methods. A short discussion of process analyzers will be included. We will also examine the relationship of pH and alkalinity in the treatment process and attendees will learn how to determine alkalinity concentration via titration. |

This class will emphasize the parameters associated with the final effluent in preparation for discharge or reclamation. Topics such as water disinfection and the importance of microbiological analysis will be discussed. Students will also review dissolved oxygen and explore the relationship between biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) and chemical oxygen demand (COD). Students will calculate BOD using classroom-derived data.
