Laboratories already using Colitag and migrating to Modified Colitag must update their procedural references, incubation times, other method-specific requirements, and continue to ensure compliance with the 2003 NELAC Standard (PT samples, Micro QA/QC, and etc). Labs currently using different methodology for coliforms and E.coli will need to apply and submit:

  • 2 acceptable PT results for Modified Colitag
  • SOP
  • a quality assurance manual
  • applicable fees (if requested outside the lab's renewal application timeframe)

The procedures, quality manuals, and proficiency testing samples need to be compliant with the 2003 NELAC Standard.

Labs must pass PTs for the new test procedure. If the test procedure is a new type of procedure or if the lab is a new lab, an on-site evaluation is required. If the new procedure is substantially similar to a procedure that the lab was previously certified for, then documentation showing that the lab has obtained all of the required elements to properly run the test procedure may be the only requirement. Modified Colitag is currently pending approval until it can be written into the state (WDNR) rules.
